Sagittaria is a series launched by Rörstrand, Sweden in the 1950s, designed by Carl‑Harry Stålhane. He was an important designer during the mid-period of the workshop, known for his sculptural vases, delicate glaze experiments, and modernist lines.

The series name comes from the aquatic plant "Sagittaria", and the shape and growth habit of its leaves inspired the form of the vessels. Stålhane transformed the light and shadow of the leaves into relief on the body of the vessel—not for decoration, but to allow light to form soft shadows on the surface, creating the illusion of a plant breathing.

This vase continues the Sagittaria vocabulary: light blue glaze, soft lines, and sculptural proportions. The handle and the slanted opening give the vessel a slight sense of direction, as if naturally leaning towards a light source.

It fully embodies the characteristics of Scandinavian modernist pottery of the 1950s: natural themes, matte or semi-gloss glazes, and simple yet three-dimensional forms. It is also because of this language that it remains popular in today's Nordic antique market.

Even without flowers, it stands like a quiet sculpture. Just a bundle of twigs or a single flower can soften a space.

Series: Sagittaria
Design Year: 1950s
Size: H 20.5 cm
Material: Stoneware
Origin: Sweden

Discontinued: Sagittaria was a short-term series from the 1950s, belonging to Stålhane's mid-period experimental line that leaned towards sculptural forms. At that time, Rörstrand shifted its main production capacity to everyday porcelain items that were more mass-producible and market-driven. Works like these, which focused on relief, glazes, and form exploration, had limited production from the start, so the series was discontinued after only a brief production period.
