The name Kosmos comes from the Greek word “kosmos”, meaning universe, order, and the harmony of all things. Gunvor Olin‑Grönqvist drew radiating lines for this series in the 1960s, like light spreading outwards from a center, or the slow, rotating tracks in the cosmos.

The layers of color in Kosmos are actually formed by a misty gradient created through a spray-glazing technique, combined with hand-painted lines. Finally, during high-temperature firing, these elements naturally produce earthy layers and a cosmic, radiating effect.
The dark glaze, under light, has the steady calm of damp earth, and also the tranquility of a Nordic winter night.

The form was designed by Ulla Procopé, with stable proportions and a substantial feel, making it one of Arabia's most representative everyday vessels during its peak production period. The languages of two designers converge here: one tells a story with glaze and lines, the other expresses balance with form and weight.

The charm of Kosmos lies in its mid-century practical aesthetics. It's not a flashy design, but rather one that encapsulates time within the glaze: intertwined light and dark bands of color, subtle variations in hand-painted lines, and natural marks left after firing. Each piece carries a touch of the cosmic and the warmth of a handcrafted era.

Placed on a table, the entire space becomes more stable and serene.

Arabia Finland|Gunvor Olin‑Grönqvist & Ulla Procopé|Kosmos
• Series:Kosmos
• Design Year:1960s
• Designer(decor):Gunvor Olin‑Grönqvist
• Designer(form):Ulla Procopé
• Size Plate:Ø 25 cm

• Discontinued: Produced in the 1960s–1970s.
In the 1970s, Arabia's factory gradually shifted towards more modernized, mass-produced manufacturing methods.
The spray-glazing and hand-painted lines of Kosmos required more manual labor and time, making it difficult to meet the demands of later mass production. As Arabia adjusted its product line in the 1970s, the Kosmos series was discontinued, becoming a classic now only available in secondary markets and among collectors.

📌Note:
• Photo 5: There is a very small natural glaze speck on the surface, formed during firing.
• Photo 6: There is a small unglazed area on the rim, accompanied by a slight glaze bump.
This is a manufacturing characteristic, not a chip or flaw.
