Arabia Finland • Botanica • Ribes nigrum • small wall plate

This piece is the work of Finnish designer Esteri Tomula (1920–1998). In the Botanica series, she chose wildflowers and plants from the Finnish forests as her subject, naming each wall plate after the plant's Latin scientific name, making each piece like a quiet ceramic botanical specimen.

Tomula captured the essence of plants with minimalist brushstrokes, gently documenting the most ordinary flowers and herbs found in the Finnish forest.

On the plate is Ribes nigrum (blackcurrant), with its deep purple, almost black berries hanging one by one from the branches, and leaves outlined in delicate lines—quiet yet full. When hung on the wall, it feels as if an orchard from late Nordic summer has been captured in the space.
