Anja Jaatinen‑Winquist|arabia’s geometry and nature

Anja Jaatinen-Winquist (1941–2021) was a Finnish ceramic designer active in the 1960s–1980s, best known for her decorative designs at the Arabia factory. Her work combined geometric lines with natural elements, showcasing both the rational and soft sides of Finnish design.

She joined Arabia in the 1960s and created several classic collections within the factory's design department. Representative works include the Saara series, renowned for its dark blue and black geometric patterns and strong modern feel, as well as other floral and abstract decorations that demonstrate her juxtaposition of nature and structure. Her designs often combined printing techniques with hand-painted details, allowing the objects to be suitable for mass production while retaining a unique artistic quality.

Jaatinen-Winquist's work was also beloved outside of Finland, particularly in the Japanese market, where her geometric and floral designs resonated with Japanese aesthetics. Collectors still covet the Saara series and her other Arabia decorative works, considering them representative of 20th-century Finnish ceramics.

Her design language emphasized the balance between structure and nature. Even though she passed away in 2021, her works continue to be used and collected in homes worldwide, perpetuating the design spirit of the Arabia workshop.
